The Gujarati Samaj of Atlanta recently felicitated Padma Shri recipient Kanubhai Tailor, founder of the Disabled Welfare Trust of India, for his lifelong work uplifting India’s differently-abled community. Struck by polio as a child in Gujarat, Tailor went on to establish a movement that has served more than 29,000 people through education, vocational training, healthcare, and advocacy. His initiatives include schools, a college, prosthetics and physiotherapy centers, and Prabhu nu Ghar, the world’s first residential facility for elderly disabled individuals. Tailor’s efforts have earned him more than 70 honors, including the Padma Shri, the Gujarat Gaurav Award, and the Godfrey Phillips Bravery National Award.
