Kiran Bhat Honored with International Writer of the Year Award

Atlanta-born author and literary innovator Kiran Bhat has been honored with the International Writer of the Year 2026 award at a ceremony held at the historic House of Commons.

The recognition marks another milestone in Bhat’s international literary career. Organizers said he is the first person of Indian origin living outside the United Kingdom to receive the honor.

The ceremony brought together writers, diplomats, lawmakers, and cultural leaders from around the world to celebrate literature’s role in fostering global understanding. Bhat was recognized for his innovative contributions to novels, poetry, travel writing, multilingual literature, and digital literary projects.

Currently based in Mumbai, Bhat was born in Atlanta and spent part of his childhood in Karnataka, India. His literary career is defined by a distinctly global perspective. Fluent in 12 languages, he has published books in five languages, including We of the Forsaken WorldSpeaking in Tongues, and Girar. His work has appeared in leading literary publications including The Kenyon ReviewPrairie SchoonerThe Brooklyn RailCordite Poetry Review, and The Caravan.

Having traveled to 177 countries and lived in 25 cities around the world, Bhat frequently explores themes of migration, identity, language, and belonging in his work. Organizers noted that his storytelling challenges traditional literary structures while encouraging readers to embrace broader global perspectives.

Beyond his own writing, Bhat is also active in literary and cultural initiatives internationally. He curates the Yatha Katha Literature Festival in Mumbai, which amplifies voices from the global south, and serves as co-chair of the Environmental Sustainability Subcommittee of the Global Indian Council.

For Atlanta’s literary and Indian American communities, Bhat’s recognition reflects the growing global influence of diverse voices emerging from local roots.
