This is a movie that celebrates man’s best friend like no other Bollywood film since Teri Meherbaniyan (1985) has done. It isn’t trying to reinvent cinema. It’s simply trying to remind us to be kinder. For this alone, Ohh My Dog is worth a watch. Hats off to director Amit Rai who shot with over 250 real dogs on set — we can feel that authenticity in every frame.
Two parallel tracks play out in the movie — one in Assam where Momo (real name Oscar), the pet dog of the nerdy Apu (Maahi Rai) goes missing, and the other in Bihar where an Indie dog named Oscar (real name Bruno) sets out on a dogged mission to find his abducted human companion, a young daily wage earner called Prince.
An investigative crime drama powered by a dog’s unwavering loyalty and devotion forms the heart of the narrative. The adorable Bruno is presented as a full-fledged action hero and his desperate pursuit of Prince’s abductors even moves you in parts. Pankaj Tripathi as a math teacher (and all the others) sportingly plays second fiddle to the dogs, but he does anchor the film with his warm presence. Child actor Maahi Rai is a natural.
Ohh My Dog had the potential to be a fantastic film given its heartfelt premise, but its length and a weak first half with its slow pacing takes away a bit of the fun from an otherwise engaging watch.
