Alpha has the distinction of being the first female-led actioner from Aditya Chopra’s Spy Universe, but if you go in expecting a Pathan-level spectacle, you will be disappointed. If you want to see gore, grit, and grounded fight scenes, it’s worth a watch. But be warned that the script never quite matches the fearless courage of the girls, Alia Bhatt and Sharvari Wagh.
The story starts with Sita (Alia Bhatt) being raised as a lab rat or experiment for an Alpha serum that’s supposed to create super soldiers. She’s stripped of emotion until she meets Durga (Sharvari Wagh) and turns rogue after discovering the truth about her past. It’s a promising premise that, unfortunately, never lives up to its potential, courtesy mediocre writing and uneven pacing.
Even though Alia Bhatt doesn’t quite fit the role of a trained killing machine, the spunky actress cannot be faulted for not giving it her all. In fact, Alpha is Alia’s show and the action sequences are slick. Sharvari does justice to her role but what was the need to sexualize her? As Col Fateh Singh, Bobby Deol attempts to recreate his intimidating aura from Animal, and Anil Kapoor as RAW chief Vikrant Kaul brings credibility to his role, but the two actors are let down by an overly convenient screenplay. And yes, there’s an extended cameo by Hrithik Roshan — he appears as Kabir from War!
To sum up, Alpha is a competently mounted but emotionally underwhelming film. Heavily inspired by Black Widow, it never seems to find a compelling pulse of its own.
