Mirzapur: The Movie
Starring: Pankaj Tripathi, Ravi Kishan, Divyenndu Sharma, Ali Fazal, Rasika Dugal
Director: Gurmmeet Singh
Music Directors: Anand Bhaskar, Vaibhav Pani, Junaid Kumar
After three successful seasons as a web series, the gritty gangster saga Mirzapur is back, this time as a feature film. Interestingly, it isn’t a sequel but a parallel story that runs alongside the events of season 1. Which means, some dead characters are suddenly alive again! While fans will enjoy seeing their favorite characters return and watch the power struggles unfold on a larger canvas, those not familiar with the Mirzapur universe may struggle to connect with the story.
The film begins strong but once the narrative shifts from Uttar Pradesh to Rajasthan, something goes amiss. The second half drags at places and the climax, though shot well, stretches on forever. On the plus side, the desert landscape gives the movie a visual sweep and texture that the series did not possess.
Pankaj Tripathi is the backbone of Mirzapur. As mafia don Kaleen bhaiya, the actor doesn’t need to speak to dominate a scene. His trademark sideways nod is enough. The chemistry and rivalry between Munna (Divyenndu Sharma) and Guddu (Ali Fazal) keep you hooked. Ravi Kishan is the standout new addition to the ensemble cast. As Babban Yadav, he almost steals the show from Tripathi, serving up a delicious cocktail of menace, dark humor, and swagger. Rasika Dugal is terrific as Kaleen bhaiya’s second wife. Overall, powerful performances and the nostalgia factor make Mirzapur a great watch. But did the movie need to be three hours long to make an impact? Absolutely not!
