December 13, 1981 – Mahesh
Chandra Bansal, thought to be one
of the oldest Indian Americans in
the United States at the time, dies
in Los Angeles.
Bansal arrived in the
United States from India in 1910 with
his family at the age of 20. He studied
at U.C. Berkeley and Stanford
University, helped the Gadar Party
with its efforts to free India from
British rule, and fought for citizenship
rights for Indians in the United
States. He was also a founding member
of the Los Angeles Gurudwara.
