Statue of Gandhi unveiled at Union Square, New York
October 2, 1986 - A statue of Mohandas K. Gandhi is unveiled at Union Square Park in New York City, on the 117th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth. It was sculpted by Kantilal B. Patel and presented to the United States and New York City by the Gandhi Memorial International Foundation. The accompanying plaque reads, “My optimism rests on my belief in the infinite possibilities of the individual to develop non-violence…. In a gentle way you can shake the world.”
