“Hindustanees of Northern California” host a dinner reception for India’s first ambassador to the U.S.

July 22, 1949 – A dinner reception is held in San Francisco in honor of the arrival of Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, India’s first ambassador to the United States. She was the sister of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the prime minister of India. The reception was held three days after her arrival at the luxurious Palace Hotel.
