A SHORT INDIAN GLOSSARY: Pamarthi
PAMARTHI
Nina Davuluri got the most
attention among all contestants in the 2014 Miss America pageant. Deservedly.
Davuluri won the title, and as the first Indian-American to do so, she made
history. In the hullaballoo, one could be forgiven for forgetting there was
another Indian-American contestant. That was Bindhu Pamarthi, Miss District of
Columbia 2013. Though currently based in D.C., where she’s a law student at
Georgetown University, Pamarthi partly grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
And yes, she also did a Bollywood dance performance at the Miss America
pageant. However, it’s unclear if the tireless choreographer Nakul Dev
Mahajan—who coached Davuluri, not to mention First Lady Michelle Obama—had
anything to do with Pamarthi’s turn on the dance floor.
Pamarthi, an activist for PETA, is keen
on teaching public school students in the D.C. area via the Street Law program.
