Westminster team wins policy debate
Over the last weekend of January, at Emory University, the Westminster Schools team of 17-year-old Anish Dayal, a senior from Milton, Georgia, and 16-year-old Harrison Hall, a junior from Atlanta, won the Barkley Forum for High Schools (BFHS) “Policy Debate” Tournament, an invitational national tournament with a competitive field comprising the top 230 debaters from 35 states across the nation.
With over 74 schools in attendance, Dayal and Hall (DH), currently the 4th ranked team in the nation, won 10 consecutive rounds to reach the championship. Along the way in the semifinals, they triumphed over the number one team in the nation from the Blake School, Minnesota, to secure a spot in the final round. After a debate about the merits of the United States government’s surveillance policies, Dayal and Hall were victorious.
