Students shine at GA Science & Engineering Fair

An impressive number of Gwinnett County Indian American students scooped up awards at the 71st annual Georgia Science & Engineering Fair (GSEF) at the University of Georgia.
Arnav Jain, an 11th grader at Gwinnett School of Mathematics Science & Technology, was conferred the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair Trip Award for developing and programming an Intelligent Medical Stapler. The prototype uses machine learning to recognize a model of skin and executes medical grade staples to suture wounds. The project’s goal is to improve accuracy, prevent scarring, and reduce infection rates following surgical procedures requiring staples to close wounds.
Hull Middle School student Shriya Tailor’s project, titled “The Electrochemistry in a Salt Water Battery”, won her several honors—the Broadcom Masters Award, Best in Category (Chemistry), and First Honors.
Another Hull Middle School student, Rajveer Singh was awarded the Quality American Psychological Society Award and Tellus’ Future Science Stars Award for his project, “The Effect of Blue and Orange Tinted Screens on Sleep.”
Jagdish Desai and Suhas Gaddam, with fellow student Changiun Lu (Gwinnett School of Mathematics Science & Technology) were honored with the U. S. Air Force Achievement Award for their work on “The Effect of Wingtip Devices on the Lift-to-Drag Ratio of a Wing.”
Lilburn MS students Judy Mammen and Manahil Ahmed picked up First Honors for their project, interestingly titled “The Skinny on our Moisturizers.”

top prize winner, Ananya Ganesh from The Westminster Schools, Fulton County, whose "Early Onset Scoliosis: Predicting Clinical Outcomes" won the PINNACLE PRIZE, GEORGIA BIOGENEIUS CHALLENGE AWARD, INTEL EXCELLENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AWARD, GSEF BEST IN CATEGORY COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY & BIOINFORMATICS SR DIV, REGIONAL FAIR ISEF TRIP WINNER - ATLANTA REGIONAL, GEORGIA SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR GRAND AWARD, and several other awards and who went on to win a Grand Award at the International Fair, national award at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, and High Honors at the International BioGenius Challenge.
