Ravi Bellamkonda named Dean of Duke Engineering School
After an international search, Prof. Ravi Bellamkonda of Atlanta has been named the new Vinik Dean of the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University, effective August 1, 2016.
Bellamkonda is a renowned biomedical engineer who has led one of the top-ranked departments in the country. As chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, his joint faculty appointment is part of a unique collaboration. He has directed an NIH-funded training grant, initiated a novel graduate leadership program, and is co-principal investigator for an Emory-Georgia Tech-Morehouse College science award grant. His research involves biomaterials and the nervous system, for nerve repair and brain tumor therapy.
From Osmania University, he went to Brown and MIT, and then worked at Case Western Reserve before moving to GA Tech in 2003. He served as associate vice president for research there. He is also president of the American Institute for Biological and Medical Engineering, a policy advocacy group, and consults frequently. His many honors include those from the Society for Biomaterials, the National Cancer Institute, National Science Foundation, and best professor award from Georgia Tech BME students.
Bellamkonda and his wife Lalita Kaligotla have two children, son Mihir and daughter Ameya.
