Paroma Chakravarty a winner in DeKalb’s GALS essay contest
Earlier this summer, in a GALS (Girls Achieving Leadership & Success) essay contest sponsored by DeKalb District Attorney Gwen Keyes Fleming in cooperation with DeKalb Solicitor-General Robert James, Paroma Chakravarty won a third prize. In her essay titled "How I Am in Control of My Destiny," Paroma, a seventh grader at Chamblee Middle School, candidly discussed her goals and aspirations, the steps she must take to achieve them, potential challenges, and how she plans to overcome those challenges. More than 300 girls submitted essays, which were then read and scored by women employees from the DeKalb County District Attorney's and Solicitor-General's offices. Based on their essay scores, students from each school and grade were selected and invited to attend a "Just Us GALS" conference at Emory University. They focused on goal setting, leadership, healthy relationships, conflict resolution, and crime prevention.
