The annual Miss India USA pageant, founded 26 years ago by Dharmatma Saran of the India Festival Committee, gained a higher profile late last year, when Sahara One Network broadcast the proceedings on television for the first time ever. Now called the Nationwide Miss India USA (Nationwide Financial is a chief sponsor), the contest is open to Indian American women between the ages of 17 and 27 years. The latest winner, Richa Gangopadhyay of Michigan, is going to South Africa this month to participate in the Miss India Worldwide pageant. Among the 24 contestants in 2007, Neha Multani of New York was the first runner-up and Georgian Nisha Palvia was the second runner-up. Nisha was also named Miss Beautiful Hair. A graduate of Walton High School in Marietta, Ga., Nisha is now pursuing a bachelor’s in industrial engineering at Georgia Tech. Her interests include not only dancing, both Bharatnatyam and the Bollywood kind, but also various sports and oil painting. The 2007 Miss India USA pageant was held at Royal Albert’s Hall in Fords, New Jersey.
