Dr. Veena N. Rao receives $100,000 grant for breast cancer research
Dr. Veena N. Rao, Professor and Co-Director of the Cancer Biology Program, and Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar in the Department of OB/GYN at Morehouse School of Medicine, has received a $100,000 grant for her breast cancer research on early detection of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC).
The grant was awarded by Georgia CORE, in partnership with It’s the Journey and A Cure In Our Lifetime. Georgia Core funds are from Georgia taxpayers who elect to contribute on their state income tax forms. It’s The Journey raises funds through its annual Georgia Two-Day Walk for Breast Cancer.
Dr. Rao has led several breakthrough research projects in breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer.

Dr. Rao completed her Ph.D. from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India and her postdoctoral fellowship from University of California, Berkeley. While working at the National Cancer Institute, she was one of two South Asian scientists to identify the ERG gene found to be involved in prostate cancer.
In April 2019, the Atlanta Telugu community recognized her with a Most Inspiring Woman award during their New Year (Ugadi) celebration.
The NRI Welfare Society of India honored her in absentia with the Mahatma Gandhi Leadership Award in October 2019 during their celebration to mark Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.
