Boisfeuillet Jones Medal for Namrata Verghese
Namrata Verghese graduated in May 2019 from Emory College with top honors in English/creative writing and psychology/linguistics, and has been awarded the Boisfeuillet Jones Medal for her ability to be a “change agent” in the world. She will also be shortly publishing her first book, a short story collection titled The Legal Alien.
Verghese adopted a novel academic path, moving between creative writing and psychology. As an Interdisciplinary Exploration and Scholarship (IDEAS) Fellow, she developed and taught courses. Professor Marshall Duke recognized her ability to create understanding through stories and recommended her as a research assistant in the Family Narratives Lab. Her honors thesis was based on research conducted on autobiographical memory.
Verghese co-created Model Minority, Emory’s Asian-American identity magazine that challenges stereotyping. She has written for publications such as Tin House, World Literature Today, and online writing platforms Emory Globe and The Tempest, and won several awards for fiction and non-fiction. She also interned at Google and with a U.S. Congress member.
As the winner of this year’s Emory’s Scholarship for Graduate Study, this talented young writer is headed to the University of Cambridge for a Master in Philosophy in criticism and culture.
