WHERE’S THE BEEF?
When McDonald’s unveils plans to open two vegetarian-only restaurants next year, you know it’s serious about conquering the Indian market. The first veggie-only restaurant will open in Amritsar, putting the Golden Arches near the Golden Temple, and the second in Kashmir, near the Vaishno Devi cave shrine. “There is a big opportunity for vegetarian restaurants (in India) as many Indians are vegetarian,” Rajesh Kumar Maini, a spokesman for McDonald’s in northern India, told AFP.
McDonald’s already has 271 restaurants in India and if the veggie-only concept catches on, it could add dozens more over the next decade. And who knows, maybe one day an Indian guru will come to America, visit McDonald’s and collapse in shock when he sees that his favorite restaurant is serving dead animals.
