University Student Deported after Faking Documents
In case you ever wondered whether it’s possible to get admission and a full scholarship to an American university by faking all your documents, 19-year-old Aryan Anand has provided an answer: yes.
But whether you can actually get away with the crime remains an unanswered question. If any students have done so, they were surely tight-lipped about it. Anand made the mistake of revealing his deceit in a Reddit post, which led to his expulsion from a Pennsylvania university and recent deportation to India.
Anand joined Lehigh University on a full scholarship in August 2023 after submitting a number of fake documents, including transcripts and financial statements. He even fabricated a death certificate for his father, who is alive, and provided a fake email address that allowed him to impersonate a school principal.
His scheme unraveled when he wrote a Reddit post titled “I have built my career and life on lies.” He used what he thought was an anonymous screen name. But a Reddit moderator noticed that he had been following posts about Lehigh University and alerted university authorities, who launched an investigation.
Anand faced felony charges of forgery and theft of services (the scholarship was valued at $85,000), but the charges were dropped through a plea agreement that resulted in his deportation.
