The daughter of a Kashmiri emigrant and a white British woman, she was a model for several years before being discovered by filmmaker Kaizad Gustad, who gave her a role in the 2003 film Boom.
She has since starred in Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam movies, and has also signed a deal to appear in a Tamil film.
Despite her limited Hindi when she first moved to Mumbai, she became a Bollywood star, partly because of her looks and, some would say, her relationship with Salman Khan.
She has been voted the sexiest woman in Asia in a British poll and has also replaced Aishwarya Rai as the most the most googled Bollywood celebrity.
