Report on Hinduism
If you think the justice system is too lenient at times, perhaps you haven’t heard of the recent case in Michigan. After a 26-year-old man pleaded no contest to a charge of ethnic intimidation, the county circuit judge gave him more than a sentence: he assigned an entire paper.
Delane D. Bell, 26, of Bay County, Michigan, attacked two men of Indian descent last November, believing them to be Muslims. He yelled “jihad” and “Osama bin Laden” at them, hit one man and damaged the other man’s car, according to a report on MLive.com.
As part of his sentence, Judge Joseph K. Sheeran ordered Bell to write a 10-page report on “the greatest accomplishments of Muslims.” But Sheeran wasn’t satisfied with Bell’s report and, since the victims were actually Hindus, asked him to write another report on Hinduism.
“Do you know what plagiarism is?” Sheeran asked Bell.
“Yes, your honor,” Bell replied.
“It’s pretty much here in your first report,” the judge said.
The judge told Bell that he wants to see more original thought in the second paper. Original thought? Someone who shouts “jihad” and “Osama bin Laden” at brown-skinned people may have a hard time with that.
