Good Sports: Pakistan, India Win Top Two Medals in Men’s Javelin
After winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra almost repeated the feat, recording a season-best throw of 89.45 meters at the Paris Olympics. But the event belonged to Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who set an Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters.
Nadeem, making a comeback from a knee injury, won the first individual Olympic gold ever for Pakistan and the country’s first Olympic medal since 1992. Chopra won silver, finishing as India’s top medalist in back-to-back Olympics.
Asked about the results, Chopra’s mother, Saroj Devi, told ANI: “We are very happy. For us, silver is also equal to gold. The one who got the gold is also like our son. He was injured, so we are happy with his performance. I will cook his favorite food.”
Chopra explained his mother’s reaction to India Today: “She lives in a village, a background where she is not influenced by news on social media and television, about the relations between India and Pakistan. She has the feeling of a mother. She speaks simply and speaks her heart.”
