Newlyweds Stuck in an Elevator
Among the many things that can potentially go wrong at a wedding, being stuck in an elevator for two and a half hours would not be on many people’s lists. Thankfully for Panav and Victoria Jha, it happened after they had exchanged vows, not before. But it also meant that they missed their recent wedding reception at an uptown Charlotte hotel.
“It was wild, but a crazy, fun, memorable experience that’s one for the books,” said Victoria, recounting the episode for TV station WBTV.
The couple had two weddings: an American-style wedding on a Friday and an Indian-style ceremony on a Saturday. After the Indian ceremony, they took an elevator to the 16th floor of the Grand Bohemian Hotel with four other members of the wedding party.
“We go up maybe five feet and then just stopped,” Panav said. “The door was slightly ajar, so I was like, ‘Hmm, that’s not normal.’”
Emergency responders were unable to get the elevator moving and had to pull each member of the wedding party to safety using a rope and harness.
Although they missed their reception, Victoria and Panav are focusing on the bright side of the experience.
“It’s going to be one we remember forever,” Panav said. “I’m going to tell my kids your mom was so beautiful, the fire department had to come.”
