More Indians Seek Asylum in the U.S., Displeasing India
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently released data showing that the number of Indians seeking asylum in the United States has jumped sharply over the last three years. Asylum applications from Indians rose from 4,330 in the 2021 fiscal year to 41,330 in the 2023 fiscal year, according to DHS’s 2023 Asylees Annual Flow Report. That’s an increase of more than 850 percent and made Indians the fifth-largest nationality group seeking defensive asylum and 10th-largest seeking affirmative asylum.
Affirmative asylum is filed by people who are not in removal proceedings, while defensive asylum is filed by those facing deportation proceedings. Aside from India, Afghanistan, and Russia, the vast majority of asylum seekers come from Central and South America.
In a statement in parliament, India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed displeasure in the growing number of asylum seekers from India. “The Government of India believes asylum seekers, while applying for asylum to a foreign government, denigrate the nation and society to obtain personal gains despite the fact that India, being a democratic country, provides avenues for everyone to redress their grievances lawfully,” the MEA said, replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
