How to Keep your Indian Host from Overfeeding You
We’ve all been there—having food heaped on our plates by an Indian host, one serving after another, despite our protests.
“Just a little more. You’ve hardly eaten anything,” the host says, trying to make us feel better about our bulging bellies.
This Indian hospitality continues to amaze an American digital creator who lives in India.
"I could arrive at an Indian's house at 4 p.m. without telling them and they're still going to feed me a lot of food," said the creator, who goes by the name “John in India” on Instagram, sharing his experience in a video that has drawn more than a million views.
In America, he’d be lucky to get a glass of water, he says, but in India, the food just keeps coming. "I try to be polite and indirect in telling them that I'm getting full but they still give me too much food and I feel like it would be rude if I just stop eating," he said.
He posed this question to his 16,000 Instagram followers: "How do I visit an Indian's house without them feeding me too much food?”
Many of his followers echoed his admiration of Indian hospitality. "I work with a lot of Indians here in the U.K. and it is the same thing,” one person wrote. “Their hospitality is the best.”
Another person offered a “cheat code” for overzealous hosts: “Tell them you are getting full when you are only half full actually. So by the end of the meal, you are actually full.”
