Good Sports: World Champions
Asha Jain, 13, of Minocqua, Wisconsin; Gopi Ramanathan, 15, of Sartell, Minnesota, and Neelam Sandhu, 14, of Bedford, New Hampshire, are world champions. The Indian-American teens represented America at the recent National Geographic World Championship in St. Petersburg, Russia, and knocked off contestants from 17 other countries, including Canada (second place) and India (third).
The trio was selected for the team based on their performance at national competitions. Gopi won his state contest twice and finished 7th at the 2012 National Geography Bee.
“I’m not even sure if I will major in geography. If there’s one thing I have to say, it’s to encourage kids to learn geography because you never know how far it will take you,” he told Minnesota’s St. Cloud Times.
Indeed, it might take you all the way to the world championship.
