GOOD SPORTS: Teeing Off Now: The Gujarat Underdawgs
Choosing the name of a professional sports franchise usually involves a lot of discussion and thought, if not months of market research. A poorly named team might have trouble attracting fans or be an easy target for ridicule. Jokes on Twitter abounded when the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets announced that they will change their name to the New Orleans Pelicans next year. Pelicans may sound like an odd name for an NBA franchise, but it’s an inspired choice compared to some of the team names in India’s new Golf Premier League: Gujarat Underdawgs, Delhi Darts, Maharashtra 59ers, Colombo 6’s, Tamilnadu Pullees and Punjab Lancers. Delhi Darts and Gujarat Underdawgs? Well, at least they didn’t call them the Delhi Dhotis and Gujarat Underpants.
