GOOD SPORTS: SAILING TO THE OLYMPICS
February 2012
The odds are stacked against her, but Rohini Rau hopes to represent India at the Summer Olympics in London, the first Indian woman to do so in the sport of sailing.
The 25-year-old medical student from Tamil Nadu has been India’s women’s champion in the Laser Radial class for the last seven years and boasts 10 national gold medals.
She finished 88th at the International Sailing Federation’s (ISAF) World Championship in Perth, failing to win a spot at the Olympics, and now her hopes rest on a regatta in Kiel, Germany, in June.
She’s eager to prove that she can excel in both academics and sports at the same time. Sailing to the Olympics would be quite an achievement, but so would sailing through medical school.Compiled and partly written by Indian humorist MELVIN DURAI, author of the novel Bala Takes the Plunge.
