GOOD SPORTS: India Finishes Fourth at Winter Youth Olympic Games
That’s a headline that might excite you, until you realize that it refers to India the skier, not India the country. India Sherret, a 15-year-old from Canada, finished fourth in the ski-cross event at the recent Winter Youth Olympic Games in Austria.
But here’s the good news: India did participate in the Games. Aanchal Thakur, a 15-year-old girl from Manali, Himachal Pradesh, was India’s sole representative and finished 23rd in slalom and 43rd in giant slalom.
Aanchal has been skiing since the age of seven and has won many national medals. “I owe it to my father, an adventure sport promoter who trained me and opened a world of opportunities for me,” she told the Chandigarh Tribune.
India sent three athletes to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and may send Aanchal to the 2014 or 2018 Winter Olympics. Don’t be surprised if India wins a medal. The country, not the skier.
