Good Sports: Golfer on the Rise
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri is the most famous Lahiri in the world but may soon have a little competition. Anirban Lahiri, who will turn 27 this month, is the No. 1 golfer in Asia and has reached a career-high ranking of 64 in the World Golf Rankings.
Lahiri vaulted up the rankings after winning the Indonesian Masters in late April and finishing sixth last month at a European Tour event, The Championship at Laguna National in Singapore.
Only one Indian golfer has ever achieved a higher world ranking: Jeev Milkha Singh, son of the legendary runner Milkha Singh, who was ranked No. 28 in 2008 after capturing four international titles.
Lahiri gives credit to his father, Dr. Tushar Lahiri, an army doctor, and his mother, Navanita Lahiri, a professor of literature, for allowing him to pursue his golf dreams.
