Good Sports: Young Powerlifter Sets World Record
Ishti Kaur is only 14 but can do something most adults can’t: lift more than twice her body weight. At the recent WPC (World Powerlifting Congress) world championships in Manchester, England, the Delhi girl completed a deadlift of 95 kg (209 lbs), giving her a world record in the 44 kg (97 lb) weight class of the junior category.
Ishti was among about 600 powerlifters from around the world, including 10 from India, who competed in the world championships.
She has been training under the watchful eye of a former powerlifting champion: her father, Daljeet Singh. She trains with him for an hour a day and also follows a strict diet. Last year, she won a gold medal at the world championships, completing a 75 kg deadlift in the 38 kg category.
