Good Sports: World Champs Get New Coach
Gautam Gambhir has been named the new head coach of India’s men’s cricket team. The former opener takes over from Rahul Dravid, who led the team to its second title at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
“I have always taken pride while donning the Indian jersey during my playing days and it is going to be no different when I take up this new role,” Gambhir said.
In an Instagram post, captain Rohit Sharma praised Dravid for his humility and love for cricket. “I have learnt so much from you and every memory will be cherished,” he wrote, adding that the T20 World Cup trophy was the “only thing missing from your arsenal and I’m so happy that we got to achieve it together.”
India, which also triumphed in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, beat England by 68 runs in the semi-finals and previously unbeaten South Africa by 7 runs in the final. The 20-team tournament, running from June 1 to 29, was co-hosted by the United States and West Indies.
