Good Sports: Thirteen-Year-Old Earns IPL Contract
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 13-year-old cricketer from Bihar, became the youngest player to earn an IPL contract when the Rajasthan Royals bid $130,000 for him in the IPL’s recent mega auction.
Suryavanshi made headlines a few weeks earlier when he scored a 58-ball century against Australia in an under-19 unofficial Test in Chennai. At age 13 years and 187 days, he became the youngest player to score a century in youth cricket, beating a record held by Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored a century when he was 14 years and 241 days.
“Incredible talent and, of course, you’ve got to have the confidence so he can step up to the IPL level,” Rajasthan CEO Jake Lush McCrum said after the auction. “Lots of work will go in over the coming months to continue to develop him, but a hell of a talent.”
