Good Sports: The Medal-Winning Financial Auditor
India’s best high jumper is working as a financial auditor for Deloitte in Kansas City. Tejaswin “TJ” Shankar, who earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from Kansas State University, won a bronze medal in high jump at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, this summer.
At Kansas State, where he competed from 2017 to 2022, he was a two-time NCAA high-jump champion, winning his last title this past June.
When he first received a college athletic scholarship offer, the Delhi native was surprised that all his expenses would be covered and thought it might be a scam.
“Since I have gone through the system and have seen all of it, I personally advocate for it,” he told Indian Express. “If it’s free and we can use it, then why are we relying on the government to spend crores of rupees on sports budgets? Trust your athletes to come back home and perform at a high level.”
