Good Sports: Texas Rangers Select Kumar Rocker in MLB Draft
Not many people get to be selected twice in a professional sports league draft, but that’s exactly what happened to baseball pitcher Kumar Rocker. In the 2021 Major League Baseball draft, the New York Mets selected the former Vanderbilt star with the 10th pick. But the Mets did not sign Rocker to a contract because they had concerns about an injury to his right arm.
After undergoing shoulder surgery, Rocker proved himself again with dominant pitching performances for the Tri-City ValleyCats of the independent Frontier League. He went back into this year’s draft, where the Texas Rangers selected him with the third overall pick. Rocker’s parents met while his African- American father, Tracy, was playing for the Washington Redskins, and his Indian- American mother, Lalitha, was a student at University of Maryland.
