Good Sports: Teenager Wins Another Chess Title for India

Just three months after Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion, another 18-year-old grandmaster from India, Pranav Venkatesh, was crowned World Junior Champion. Pranav went undefeated at the recent FIDE World Junior Championship, held in Petrovac, Montenegro. He finished ahead of 156 other contestants, including 11 grandmasters.
Only three other Indians have won the junior title: Abhijeet Gupta in 2008, Pentala Hariskrishna in 2004, and Viswanathan Anand in 1987. “It’s a very happy and proud moment to win the championship and be part of this group,” Pranav told Chess.com. Like Anand, Gukesh and a number of other grandmasters, Pranav honed his talent in Chennai, considered the chess capital of India.
