Good Sports: ‘Staggering’ Bids for New IPL Franchises
Soon after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced two new franchises for the Indian Premier League, former Australia spinner Shane Warne tweeted, “Wow! Congratulations to both of the new franchise owners. Staggering amounts of money for each team & shows why cricket has become the 2nd most popular & biggest sport on the planet.”
Staggering indeed. As the winning bidders, RPSG Ventures will pay $932 million for the Lucknow franchise and Irelia Company Pte Ltd. (CVC Capital Partners) will pay $692 million for the Ahmedabad franchise.
The new teams will be part of the 10- team IPL in 2022, each team playing seven home and seven away matches.
