Good Sports: SANIA MIRZA’S ODE TO MOTHERS
Sania Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam doubles champion, took a two-year break from tennis after giving birth to her son, Izhaan Mirza Malik, in 2018. The 34-year-old returned to competitive tennis last January and won the doubles title at the Hobart International tournament in Australia.
Mirza recently wrote “An Ode to All Mothers” on Instagram, sharing her thoughts about balancing motherhood and a professional career. “To a world that stereotypes women as homemakers it often comes as a surprise if one succeeds in fulfilling her dreams and career with sheer grit and determination,” Mirza wrote.
She gave tribute to tennis great Serena Williams for inspiring her, partly through the documentary Being Serena, which captures Williams’ determined return to tennis after becoming a mother in 2017. “It shows so much about her personality, her fighting spirit, her passion and her will to succeed even after achieving so much,” Mirza wrote.
