Good Sports: P. T. Usha Heads Indian Olympic Association
One of India’s greatest sprinters, known to her fans as the “Payyoli Express,” has become the first woman to head the Indian Olympic Association.
“With the warm support of my fellow athletes and National Federations, I am humbled and honoured to accept and file for the nomination of the president of IOA!” tweeted P.T. Usha, who was unopposed.
Now 57, Usha won four gold medals and seven silvers at the Asian Games, but her biggest accomplishment might be finishing fourth in the women’s 400m hurdles at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, just one-hundredth of a second behind the bronze medal winner. Almost 40 years later, her time of 55.42 seconds remains an Indian national record.
