Good Sports: MORE GOLD FOR DIPA
It may be a long shot for India to win a medal in gymnastics at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, but if anyone can do it, it would be Dipa Karmakar. The 21-year-old gymnast from Tripura won five gold medals at India’s 35th National Games, sweeping all four individual events and the all-around title, repeating her feat from 2011.
Karmakar won a bronze medal in women’s vault at the 2014 Glasgow Games, becoming only the second Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in artistic gymnastics.
Hoping to qualify for Rio, she is trying to persuade Indian sports authorities to hire a foreign coach for her.
“You need to move to the next level to think about participating in the Olympics,” she told The Chandigarh Tribune. “My only target for this year is to crack the qualifiers.”
