Good Sports: Many Firsts for Paralympic Medalists
Indian athletes made history in different ways at the Paralympics. Harvinder Singh, 33, won India’s first-ever gold medal in archery in either the Olympics or Paralympics.
“It feels fantastic,” said Singh, who finished first in the men’s individual recurve open. “I’m just blessed to achieve this gold for India.” Preethi Pal, bronze medalist in both the 100m and 200m races (T35 class), became the first Indian to win a medal in a track event at the Paralympics.
Avani Lekhara defended her title in the women’s 10m air rifle standing (SH1), becoming the first Indian woman to win two Paralympic gold medals. Javelin thrower Sumit Antil also defended his title, becoming the first Indian man to do so, while setting a Paralympics record with a throw of 70.59m (F64 class).
Mariyappan Thangavelu won bronze in high jump (T42 class), becoming the first Indian to win medals in three consecutive Paralympics (gold at Rio, silver at Tokyo).
