Good Sports: ‘Life-Changing’ Salaries in Women’s Premier League
The Women’s Premier League kicked off its inaugural season on March 4 with a Mumbai Indians’ victory over the Gujarat Giants. Organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the five-team women’s professional cricket league attracted top players from around the world, giving them an opportunity to earn salaries that have stunned observers.
For just three weeks of play, Smriti Mandhana earned the top salary of 34 million rupees ($430,000), while Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner and England’s Nat Sciver- Brunt earned 32 million rupees each ($400,000).
“You’d be lucky if you made that out of the whole of your career as an international female cricketer, going back a few years,” former England batter Lydia Greenway told Viacom18 Sports. “It’s a life-changing amount of money.”
