Good Sports: Khan Qualifies for Winter Olympics in Two Events
Arif Mohammed Khan, an alpine skier from Jammu & Kashmir, recently became the first athlete from India to qualify for two events at the Winter Olympics. Competing in both slalom and giant slalom, he is expected to be India’s only representative at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, which begin on Feb. 4.
The 31-year-old Khan, who began skiing at age 4, has competed in many international ski events where he was the only entrant from India.
“It’s funny because I’ve been to four World Championships, and every time I’m being asked, is there skiing in India?” he told NPR. “Like, guys, we’re living in the Himalayas. It’s the highest mountain range in the world. What do you expect?”
