Good Sports: KARMAKAR WINS GOLD
India’s top gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics, re-established herself as one of the world’s best vaulters by winning the gold medal in Artistic Gymnastics at the recent FIG World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey. It was her first medal in a World Challenge Cup.
The 24-year-old had been recovering from an ACL injury that she suffered following the 2016 Olympics, where she finished fourth in the vault event. The injury forced her to skip this year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Her next challenge is winning a medal at the Asian Games that begin this month in Indonesia. “Asian Games is very tough,” she told PTI. “China, Japan, Korea will pose a big challenge. I can’t guarantee a medal. But I will give my best.”
