Good Sports: Junior Weightlifter Wins Gold
Harshada Garud, an 18-year-old from Pune, recently became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the World Junior Weightlifting Championship.
Competing in the 45kg category at the 2022 championship in Greece, Garud lifted 70kg in snatch and 83kg in clean and jerk for a total of 153kg, beating her closest rival by 3kg.
Her father, Sharad, who once dreamed of competing internationally as a weightlifter, pushed his daughter into the sport when she was 12 after seeing her lift a 50kg sack of rice.
“Thankfully, my daughter hated studies, or she would have been caught up in books,” he told The Indian Express.
Changing her clean-and-jerk technique and eating better food while attending a national camp in Patiala allowed her to make great strides. She’s determined to keep improving until she brings home an Olympic medal.
