Good Sports: INDIA’S FIRST GOLD AT YOUTH OLYMPICS
The Summer Youth Olympics finally produced gold for India. Jeremy Lalrinnunga, a weightlifter from Mizoram, ended India’s gold medal drought when he lifted a combined weight of 274 kgs in the Men’s 62 kg Group A event at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The 15-year-old lifted 150 kg in the clean and jerk, and 124 kg in the snatch round.
A day after Jeremy’s victory on Oct. 8, 16-year-old shooter Manu Bhaker of Haryana became India’s first female gold medalist, finishing first in the 10 m air pistol event.
In the inaugural Summer Youth Olympics in 2010, India won six silver and two bronze medals, but fared poorly at the 2014 games, winning just one silver and one bronze.
