Good Sports: Indian Fencer wins Bronze at Asian Championship
C.A. Bhavani Devi continues to make history for India in fencing. She won a bronze medal at the recent Asian Fencing Championship in Wuxi, China, becoming the first Indian to win a medal at the event.
The 29-year-old Chennai native defeated reigning world champion Misaki Emura of Japan 15-10 in the quarterfinals of the women’s saber event, before losing 15-14 to Uzbekistan’s Zaynab Dayibekova in the semi-finals. “This medal is very precious for me, and also very important for India. I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time,” Bhavani told the Hindustan Times. “I know it’s a bronze, but it’s a good result for my persistent efforts.”
In 2021, Devi became the first-ever Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympics, representing India at the Summer Games in Tokyo. She also won gold medals at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
