Good Sports: India Wins Gold in Lawn Bowls
Only 13 countries have won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in lawn bowls. India joined this exclusive club when its women’s fours team won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
They beat New Zealand 16-13 in the semi-final and South Africa 17-10 in the final to win India’s first Commonwealth Games medal in lawn bowls.
The four members were Lovely Choubey, 42, a police constable in Jharkhand; Pinki, 41, a PE teacher in Delhi; Rupa Rani Tirkey, 34, a district sports officer in Jharkhand; and Nayanmoni Saikia, 33, a forest officer in Assam.
“We used to lose by one point,” Choubey said after the final. “But this time we decided that we will not lose by one point and we will bring back the medal.”
