Good Sports: India Wins Five Gold Medals at Chess Olympiad
India’s chess players made history at the 45th International Chess Federation (FIDE) Chess Olympiad in Budapest, winning gold medals in both men’s and women’s competitions as well as four individual contests.
The men’s team of Gukesh D, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, and Arjun Erigaisi captured gold in the open event, while Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, and Tania Sachdev triumphed in the women’s competition.
The men’s team won 10 out of 11 rounds, with one draw against defending champion Uzbekistan, while the women’s team won nine out of 11 rounds.
Gukesh, 18, who will challenge China’s Ding Liren for the world championship next year, was outstanding, winning individual gold on the top board, while Erigaisi, Deshmukh, and Agrawal won gold on their respective boards.
“I feel great, especially with the quality of my games and how we played as a team and despite many close misses in the past, we managed to dominantly win this time,” Gukesh told International Chess Federation (FIDE).
