Good Sports: India may Bid on 2036 Olympic Games
India’s sports minister Anurag Thakur says that India is “seriously” considering making a bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
“If India is making news in every sector, from manufacturing to services, then why not in the field of sports?” he told The Times of India.
The next three Olympics will be held in Paris, Los Angeles, and Brisbane. Bids for the 2036 Games are expected to come from South Korea, Indonesia, and Qatar, among other countries.
While New Delhi has hosted the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, Thakur believes that Gujarat, home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, could be a potential venue for the 2036 Olympics.
“Gujarat has several times expressed interest in hosting the Olympics,” he said. “They have the infrastructure.... It’s also part of the state government’s manifesto to host the Olympics in Gujarat.”
