Good Sports: India Defends Asian Hockey Championship
Defending champion India beat host nation China 1-0 to win the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy for the fifth time. Jugraj Singh scored the only goal in the final at Moqi Hockey Training Base in Hulunbuir, China.
Six of the best Asian national teams competed in the tournament. The Indian team won all seven of their matches, including a dominant 4-1 victory over South Korea in the semi-finals.
India’s captain Harmanpreet Singh scored seven goals and was voted Player of the Tournament. He said the team’s recent achievements, including a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, have “instilled a deep camaraderie within the team; we are willing to die for one another.”
Eight Asian Champions Trophy competitions have been held since 2011 and India has won five, two more than Pakistan (they were joint champions in 2018).
